Happy Winter-een-mas

Greetings, readers of the blog. This post is obscenely early, but it is on Tuesday. I am going to continue my deviation from the topic of music as I believe there are more important things this week. My subject of the week shall be the holiday that is in multiple posts and our group New Year’s resolution: Winter-een-mas.

As mentioned in previous posts, Winter-een-mas is a celebration for gamers designed and implemented in Tim Buckley’s Ctrl+Alt+Del webcomic. The holiday itself lasts the week of January 25th-31st, but is commonly celebrated throughout January. Each of the seven days is dedicated to a different genre of game described here by the almighty Wikipedia:

January 25th: Adventure games, symbolized by a man dressed as Indiana Jones.

January 26th: First Person Shooter (FPS) games, with a 21 year-old sleep deprived gamer as its symbol.

January 27th: Fighting games, represented by a martial artist with too many blows to the head

January 28th: Real-time Strategy (RTS) games, whose emblem is a large bearded man with a pocket protector inside another pocket protector.

January 29th: Racing games, shown as a racer with old-fashioned racing helmet and racing goggles holding a detached steering wheel.

January 30th: Role Playing Games (RPGs), depicted as an elf-like woman holding floating dice above her left hand.

January 31st: Sports games, with a round, middle-aged man wearing a #10 jersey and holding a beer bottle in each hand as its emblem.

Celebrations for Winter-een-mas vary depending on the person or the size of group involved. Most commonly, long hours are spent on continuous gaming and, notably, not sleeping. Video game music, small conventions, and game-related art may also be involved. However, another thing gamers should be looking for is the Winter-een-mas sale from EB Games and select other game stores, which do indeed recognize the holiday.

My personal plans for the season include several amazing games, the latter four of which are new to me:

Dungeons and Dragons Online

Minecraft

Spore

Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword

Pokemon Ruby

Pokemon Platinum

Fate

Fate: Undiscovered Realms

Torchlight

Gauntlet: Dark Legacy (something I bought on a whim today because it is the sequel to an arcade favorite in my family and was on sale for $3 – don’t ask me how it is yet)

Feel free to give any of your own plans or suggestions in the comments. If you have yet to read the comics pertaining to Winter-een-mas, you should do so. They begin in 2003 and continue in January each subsequent year, including this one.

A presto!
